As the weather gets hotter and hotter, you’ll want to find places where you can enjoy the outdoors while staying cool. What better place to escape the heat wave than by the sea? Massachusetts has some incredible beaches for families, groups of friends, and beach bums of all ages. Grab your towel, sunscreen, and swimsuit for a cool dip in the Atlantic!
If you’re in the Boston area, Carson Beach in South Boston has been voted one of the “Best Urban Beaches” by MSN. It’s the largest beach in Southie and attracts a diverse crowd from families to beach bros. There are also plenty of amenities, including public restrooms, first aid and lifeguard stations, and snack bars. For something a bit smaller, Constitution Beach is a crescent-shaped stretch of sand in East Boston. This hidden gem is great for a swim or a rest from playing on the nearby athletic fields. Finally, to really get away from the big city, Lovells Island in Boston Harbor Islands is a nearby camping island, with an unsupervised swimming beach and a fascinating history.
If you find yourself on the North Shore, the best places by far to lay in the sun or take a dip are 40 Steps in Nahant, Crane Beach in Ipswich, Long Beach in Gloucester, and Plum Island Beach in Newburyport. Plum Island Beach is especially cozy, with the beautiful town of Newburyport nearby. It’s full of restaurants, shops, and markets.
On the South Shore, Duxbury Beach, Humarock Beach in Scituate, Natasket Beach in Hull, and Plymouth Beach are the places to go to beat the heat. Plymouth Beach is particularly known for being family-friendly, with a wealth of rock pools and other places to explore.
